WRX project manager Masao Takatsu was apparently misquoted when he stated that hatchback versions of the WRX and STI were under consideration. When it came time for Subaru to work on the next-generation WRX and STI models, limited resources forced Subaru to choose between the hatchback or sedan body style. Subaru execs felt that the sedan body style would be the better choice, even though in the U.S. sales of the hatchback and sedan version of the WRX were split evenly and buyers in the U.S. prefered the STI hatchback 3:1.
