Last week Tesla surprised everyone when it unveiled the new Tesla Roadster a move that could bring more electric sports cars to life. Earlier this year Porsche reportedly shelved plans to introduce a hybrid version of the next-generation 911, but now Porsche has apparently brought the electrified 911 back to life.
According to Bloomberg, the Porsche 911 Hybrid will be introduced a few years after the next-generation 911 debuts next year. This means that the 911 Hybrid could arrive around the same time as the Tesla Roadster, which is slated to arrive by 2020. The biggest difference is that the 911 won’t be a fully electric vehicle like the new Tesla Roadster. Porsche is reportedly targeting an electric driving range around 40 miles, which is a lot less than the Tesla Roadster with its 620 mile range.
Porsche has yet to confirm any of the plans, but a spokesman did confirm to Bloomberg that the next technology in the next 911 will allow integration of an electric powertrain. Two months ago it was also reported that Porsche is looking at solid-state battery technology for future electrified versions of the 911 and Boxster.
