Last week Nissan announced plans to expand its Nismo performance sub-brand with the creation of Nismo Cars Business Department. The new goal of the new department is to create a greater range of Nismo models, in more markets. The expansion could even expand beyond sports cars and sedans and eventually include crossovers and trucks.

Nissan currently offers seven Nismo models, which includes versions of the Juke, 370Z, Sentra and the top dog, the GT-R. Nissan hopes to double the amount of models by 2022 according to Takao Katagiri, CEO of Nissan Motorsports International Co. Last year Nissan only sold 15,000 Nismo units, but by the early 2020s, it hopes that number jumps to around 100,000 worldwide.

Nissan introduced the Nismo brand in 2013 and Nissan plans to make them available globaly in Japan, North America, Europe and the Middle East. China, Southeast Asia and Latin America are also possible markets for the future.

Katagiri has also revealed that Nissan will eventually offer a Nismo truck in the US,”We see potential in the expansion of categories.”

Last year Nissan might have given the world a preview of the new Nismo truck with the Titan Warrior concept at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show. “Truck buyers have a seemingly insatiable appetite for more content and more unique offerings,” said José Muñoz, executive vice president, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and chairman, Nissan North America, Inc.
