Sales of the Nissan Leaf totaled 3,875 so far this year, with a record 1,708 units sold in June alone. Sales of the Chevy Volt have totaled 2,745 units, but only 561 units were sold last month.
Nissan’s Leaf is catching up due to a slow production start last year. Nissan expects to move 12,000 Leafs this year, but it expects that total to eventually reach 200,000 units annually in the U.S.
GM plans on selling 16,000 Volts this year and hopes to boost that total to 60,000 units in 2012.
