The battle is heating up between the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt. The Chevy Volt was beating the Nissan Leaf in sales through May of this year, but last month the Nissan Leaf took the lead.

Sales of the Nissan Leaf totaled 3,875 so far this year, with a record 1,708 units sold in 2011_Chevy_Volt_new_fr4.jpgJune alone. Sales of the Chevy Volt have totaled 2,745 units, but only 561 units were sold last month.

Nissan’s Leaf is catching up due to a slow production start last year. Nissan expects to move 12,000 Leafs this year, but it expects that total to eventually reach 200,000 units annually in the U.S.

GM plans on selling 16,000 Volts this year and hopes to boost that total to 60,000 units in 2012.
