VW has been vocal about the fact that the current VW Beetle isn’t a hot seller in its lineup, but unlike the Scirocco, the Beetle may live to see another day. VW is currently trying to decide if the next-generation Beetle should switch to a fully electric platform.

VW’s chairman Herbert Diess recently told Autocar that an electric Beetle is in the proposal phase, but the odds are pretty strong that it will be approved. “The next decision on electric cars will be what kind of emotional concepts we need,” says Diess. The term “emotional concepts” is being used for models like the Microbus and Beetle.

If the next Beetle does go electric, it will be based on VW’s MEB platform and be the second retro-styled EV, following the introduction of the new electric Microbus.

While a decision still hasn’t been made, Diess stated, “If we wanted to do a Beetle, electrically it would be much better than today’s model, much closer to history, because it could be rear-wheel drive.”
