Land Rover creative director Gerry McGovern has revealed more details about the new Defender. McGovern spoke to the press during the LA Auto Show this week where he discussed the design of the new Defender and revealed that not everyone will like it.

Even though the Defender has built up a loyal fan base over 68 years, Land Rover isn’t going to create a simple copy of the old one with new tech features.

“I love the fact all these people are enthusiastic about it. I appreciate they’re the ones driving the euphoria but if they’re expecting to see a facsimile of the old one with all the latest tech, then I don’t think they’ll be satisfied.”

Land Rover hasn’t revealed when we’ll see the new Defender, but in October Gerry McGovern revealed that the design is finalized and that we’re about a year or so away from its debut.

Even though the new Defender won’t necessarily look like the old one, it will be just as capable and durable. The good news is that the new Defender will be a global model and will be powered by more modern engines, like Land Rover’s four-cylinder Ingenium engines. There’s also talk about a fully electric or plug-in hybrid version in the future.
