Land Rover is currently working on the next-generation Land Rover Defender, which will be offered in the United States. Land Rover hasn’t revealed many details about the new Defender, but there’s a chance that it could be offered with an electrified powertrain.

Electrified Land Rover Defender

Jaguar Land Rover recently announced plans to electrify its entire lineup by 2020 and that probably also includes the new Land Rover Defender. Motor Authority recently asked Chris Marchand, executive vice president for Jaguar Land Rover North America if the an electrified Land Rover Defender is in the cards.

Of course Marchand didn’t want to give any more details, so he simply stated, “That’s as far as we’re willing to go with that.”

While we don’t know what will power the next Defender, it could be offered by a few options, like the new plug-in hybrid powertrain that is debuting in the 2019 Range Rover or maybe something more simple like a 48-volt mild hybrid system. A fully electric version is also possible.

Land Rover hasn’t confirmed when we’ll see the new Defender, but a few months ago Land Rover design boss, Gerry McGovern stated that it’s “not far away.” There’s a rumor that it will debut in 2018.
