Porsche’s CEO Matthias Müller recently confirmed to Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport that the next-gen Porsche Boxster and Cayman will be getting a four-cylinder boxer engine. Müller says that following the 919 Hybrid race car, which also uses a four-cylinder engine, future Porsche road cars will also get four-cylinder engines.
Unlike the V4 engine in the 919 Hybrid, the Boxster and Cayman will get a four-cylinder engine with a 180-degree horizontally opposed layout. “We will continue with the downsizing strategy and develop a new four-cylinder boxer engine, which will see service in the next-generation Boxster and Cayman.”

Müller did not reveal how much power the new four-cylinder engine could have, but he did state that it could have up to 395 horsepower, which is more than the 3.4L six-cylinder in the Boxster and Cayman GTS models.
