We’re getting closer to the arrival of the next-generation Land Rover Defender, which is expected to debut at some point next year. We’ve already received several hints about what we can expect from the next-generation Defender, including the fact that it won’t be a retro-styled model.

Unlike the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, which kept its iconic look with its latest redesign, Land Rover will give the next-generation a completely new look that will not look like the original. Car Advice recently questioned Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover about the next-generation Defender.

“The better solution is always the enemy of the good one. The old Defender was very good, but be assured the new one will be exceptional.”

In addition to the new design, the new Land Rover Defender will also be packed with the brand’s latest tech features. “Technology is going to be mandatory in the new Defender. You simply can’t build this kind of vehicle without it anymore,” Speth stated. “You can’t achieve the emissions levels and you cannot achieve the CO2 levels required of vehicles these days.”

When Car Advice brought up the new G-Class, Speth replied, “I think it’s a very interesting approach to keep designing the same vehicle but move ahead with new technology inside, but at the end of the day it’s only a halfway approach.”

“To be really relevant while using the latest technology, and to hit all our environmental targets, we can’t keep looking back. We have to move forward in this regard.”
