BMW has confirmed that the next-generation BMW 1-Series will switch to a new front-wheel-drive platform. Currently the 1-Series sends its power to the rear wheels, but the next model will be based on BMW’s new range of front-wheel-drive models.
In addition to switching to a front-wheel-drive platform, the 1-Series lineup will also see the introduction of a new four door sedan. The new four door 1-Series is known internally as “New Entry-level Sedan” and will join a new segment of small premium four door sedans. The 1-Series sedan will compete primarily with the Audi A3 sedan and Mercedes-Benz CLA.
The 1-Series sedan is expected to launch in 2017.
