We’ve been waiting to hear about a successor to the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 coupes, but a new report claims that it isn’t happening. If the rumor is true, Subaru and Toyota have decided to not work on a replacement for the BRZ and 86.

2019 Subaru BRZ

According to Japanese Nostalgic Car, sources are claiming that the BRZ and 86 are done. With the arrival of the Supra may have also put the nail in the coffin for the 86. While the 2020 Supra is priced well above the 86 in the US, other markets are getting a cheaper four-cylinder powered Supra, which could replace the 86.

Not all is lost yet, since Toyota has hinted recently that it could bring back the MR2. While it have the exact same formula as the 86 and BRZ, it could be something a bit more interesting if it arrives with an electrified powertrain. Toyota may also partner again with Subaru for the new mid-engined MR2.
