Opel has reportedly registered the “Cascada” and “Calibra” nameplates in the U.S., which could mean they may be offered as Buicks.
Opel has reportedly registered the “Cascada” and “Calibra” nameplates in the U.S. What does that mean? Well the Opel brand is not offered in the U.S., but many of its models are sold here as Buicks.
By registering both the “Cascada” and “Calibra” names here, means that there is a possibility that both models could be coming here as Buick models. Outgoing GM Ceo Dan Akerson and several other GM execs have hinted that the Buick and Opel brands could become closer in the future, so it may not be long before we see the Cascada convertible in the U.S.
It’s a little less clear what the Calibra will be, since in the past it was basically a two-door version of the Opel Vectra, which was the predecessor to the current Insignia. Opel has shown a coupe version of the Insignia as a concept, but production plans haven’t been announced.
Lastly before we get too excited about the possibility of more Opel models coming to the U.S., the latest trademark registrations could just be a step to protect the Opel names. Several automakers will often trademark names but never use them.
