Mazda hints that its new rotary engine could be turbocharged

Yes, Mazda is finally working on a new rotary engine and according to one report, it could get a turbocharger. Speaking to Australia’s Motoring, Mazda’s drivetrain and powertrain assistant manager, Tetsushi Marutani, stated, “Personally, I think that a rotary with some turbo or compressor would be good. Because a rotary, in my opinion, they require more low speed, low down torque. So if we have some small compressor or turbo, it would help.”

Other than that we don’t know any other details, but at least it provides more proof that Mazda is working on a new rotary engine, which will likely be used in a new RX model. Mazda recently provided a hint at what it could look like with the RX-VISION concept that was revealed last year in Tokyo.

While the latest report does reveal that Mazda is looking at a turbocharger for its new rotary engine, there’s no confirmation yet that the turbocharger will actually happen. “We are still developing the new engines with rotary, Marutani stated. “So in the future we hope to release it, of course, yes. But it’s still under development. We can’t say anything about the [rotary] program.”
