Toyota’s newest and smallest Prius, the subcompact 2012 Prius c five-door hatchback has officially went on sale on March 12th. According to Toyota in the first three days on the market, it sold 1,201 units of the Prius c, making it one of Toyota’s fastest-selling models.

“A number of factors drive the auto market, and fuel prices is one of them,” said Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager of the Toyota Division. “With 53 miles-per-gallon in the city and priced under $19,000, the timing for Prius c couldn’t be better.”

The introduction of the Prius c, now means that there are four Prius models to choose from. Last month Prius sales totaled 20,593 units.

The 2012 Prius c starts at $18,950 and is powered by a 1.5L four-cylinder engine that’s mated to an electric motor for a total output of 99 horsepower. It’s rated at an EPA-estimated 53/46/50 city/highway/combined mpg.
