The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is one of the most iconic SUVs on the market. Even after 39 years, the G-Class is easily one of the most recognizable and sought after SUVs available. Now the G-Class is getting its first ever redesign and luckily a lot has changed, but at the same time a lot hasn’t.

The 2019 G-Class is new from the ground up, but on the outside it does’t look that different from the original. Obviously that’s intentional, since G-Class fans are diehard fans that would never want their boxy SUV to look any different. There are some big changes though, like its length, which has grown 2.1-inches and it’s now 4.8-inches wider.

Even though its design looks familiar, the exterior is now made of a combination of high-strength steel and aluminum. The new materials will help cut a few pounds and if you look closely the G-Class looks a bit more modern with tighter panel gaps, a major improvement. The lighting at the front and rear also looks similar, but LED lighting makes it look more up to date.

Under the skin, the G-Class rides on a rugged ladder frame and the G-Class has a new independent front suspension. The rear suspension features a solid rear axle with four trailing arms and a Panhard rod. Thanks to the suspension updates, the 2019 G-Class can now ford 27.6 inches of water, a 3.9-inch improvement.

Under the hood the 2019 G-Class will be powered by the same 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 as the current model. It generates 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft. of torque. The V8 is now mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Inside the 2019 G-Class will feature a more comfortable and spacious interior thanks to more leg, elbow and head room than before. The 2019 G-Class also features the latest tech features, like adaptive cruise control, active brake assist with traffic sign assist, lane keep assist and a push button start. The G-Class will also get a Burmester Surround Sound Audio System.

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G550 will arrive in showrooms late this year.
