The slow selling Maybach brand is officially getting the axe according to Mercedes-Benz sources that spoke with Autocar.

Mercedes-Benz has decided to kill off the Maybach brand since sales of the current 57 and 62 models have failed to meet expectations.

According to one insider, “We’ve come to the conclusion that it is better to cut our losses with Maybach than to continue into an uncertain future with a brand that has failed to live up to original sales expectations.”

The next-generation S-Class is expected to fill the void left by the departed Maybach models. According to the sources the next S-Class will be offered with three different wheelbase options.

The current Maybach 57 and 62 models will continue to be produced until the next S-Class is introduced in early 2013.
