We’ve been eagerly awaiting the return of Mazda’s rotary engine, which was slated to debut as a range extender in the MX-30, but now Mazda says it hasn’t decided when it will introduce it.

“We are still considering using the rotary engine as a range extender, but the timing of its introduction is undecided,” explained Mazda spokesperson Masahiro Sakata told Automotive News.

While Mazda is saying it hasn’t decided the fate of the rotary engine, there’s another report that out of Japan that claims that range extender plans have been killed. Both the Nikkei and Nikkan Jidosha Shimbun claim that Mazda has killed the plans since it would require a bigger battery, which would make its EVs more expensive.

So for now, Mazda will introduce the 2022 MX-30 in the US this fall as an EV, the plug-in hybrid version with the rotary engine was slated to arrive in 2022, but it looks like the PHEV isn’t going to happen. The MX-30 needed the range extender, since the EV only has a 124 mile range on Europe’s WLTP cycle, in the US the EPA will give it a range rating.

Mazda is planning on introducing 10 hybrids and three EVs between 2022 and 2025.
