Maserati is set to enter the SUV segment with a new SUV that will borrow its platform from the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Maserati has given us a preview of its new SUV today with the Kubang concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Although the concept that is debuting in Frankfurt is new, the Kubang name is not. Maserati originally used the Kubang name for an SUV concept at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show. Unlike the original concept, the newest Kubang concept is a result of the new partnership between Fiat and Chrysler.

The Maserati Kubang is going to go head to head with models like the Porsche Cayenne. Although it will share some of its architecture with the Grand Cherokee, Maserati says that its engines will be designed in Modena and produced by Ferrari. The engines will also be mated to a new eight-speed automatic transmission.
