We’ve been wondering when Lexus is going to give the GX SUV a full update, since it’s quite old. The 2022 GX did get a much needed infotainment system upgrade, but what does Lexus have planned for the future? Well it looks like a new powertrain is coming, since Toyota recently trademarked the “GX 550” name in Costa Rica.

MotorTrend has discovered that Toyota trademarked the name on September 7, 2021. The current GX has been on sale for more than a decade, which is currently called the GX 460. It’s expected that the a new GX will arrive in a year or two and if the GX550 name is any clue, it’s going to get a new engine. The GX460 is currently powered by a 301 horsepower 4.6-liter V8, but could the GX 550 get a new twin-turbocharged V6.

If it does, the GX 550 will likely get a version of the 3.5-liter V6 that powers the new 300-series Land Cruiser. That means it could have around 400 horsepower. Lexus has not made any official announcements about the next-generation GX, so we’ll have to wait and see.
