Kia has revealed two off-road-focused EV concepts at the SEMA show in Las Vegas, bringing rugged styling and new capabilities to two of the brand’s EVs.
American buyers will recognize the general design of the Kia EV9 Advntr concept as it’s based on the current EV9 production vehicle. Building on that solid foundation, Kia has added tons of off-road kit to up its trail-ready credentials. This kit includes new, more aggressive front and rear facias complete with tow hitch points, reinforced rocker panels, and, of course, more rugged wheels and tires.
The Kia EV9 Advntr has also been lifted by three inches over the standard EV9, which should greatly improve its off-road prowess. A new, very substantial-looking roof rack is ready to transport camping gear, luggage, or even a specially designed roof-mounted tent.
American buyers will find themselves less familiar with the PV5 Wkndr concept as it’s based on Kia’s Purpose Beyond Vehicle platform that is not currently offered for sale. This MPV-like model features many of the same rugged enhancements found on the EV9 Advntr but tweaked for the PV5’s unique shape and capabilities. The PV5 Wkndr is positioned as more of a soft-roader for lighter trail exploration duties and includes a lifted ride height and more rugged wheels and tires.
Inside is where the PV5 Wkndr concept really shines as Kia has sought to make it a “Swiss army knife on wheels.” This means a highly modular cabin arrangement that can be customized to meet the changing needs/activities of its owner. A new “Gear Head” storage solution debuts as an off-board sheltered storage area that can be used to store equipment when stationary or even be converted into a mobile pantry for those looking to cook up a meal while exploring the backtrails.
The PV5 Wkndr also features solar panels and hydro turbine wheels that can recharge its batteries and power other onboard components. You’ll probably run out of food before the PV5 Wkndr runs out of electricity.
Both concepts were dreamed up by Kia’s designers at the Kia Design Center America in Irvine, CA. Though both vehicles are very much concepts, we wouldn’t be surprised if at least a few elements found their way into future production vehicles/trims, particularly the EV9.
Interested parties can see both concepts at the SEMA show that runs from November 5th through November 8th, 2024.
