Hyundai has unveiled the all-new 2018 Elantra GT at the Chicago Auto Show. The new Elantra GT joins a growing list of compact hatchbacks and is now more aggressive on the outside and larger on the inside than before.

The Elantra GT is sold as the i30 in Europe, which was unveiled last fall. Compared to the last-generation Elantra GT, the all-new model is lower, wider with a more aggressive look. Under the skin the use of more high-strength steel makes the Elantra GT stiffer and lighter. It’s 22-percent more rigid than the last GT to be specific. And the body-in-white weighs 61 pounds less.

Since versatility is one of the main reasons that buyers choose the hatchback model over the sedan version, the Elantra GT’s interior is spacious with more cargo capacity than all of its direct competitors, including the new Civic and Cruze hatchbacks. The interior also gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus wireless smartphone charging. An 8-inch display audio system is also standard.

The Elantra GT will arrive this summer with a choice of two engines: a 162-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder or a the same 201-hp 1.6L turbo that powers the Elantra Sport. The 2.0L can be mated to either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, while the 1.6L either gets a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch.
