With the introduction of large panoramic sunroofs, there’s now a new danger that passengers could be thrown out of the car, through the roof during an accident. To prevent this, Hyundai has introduced the world’s first panoramic sunroof airbag.
The airbag is designed to keep passengers inside the vehicle if there is an accident. The airbag is installed inside the sunroof and deploys from the rear of the vehicle. It resembles a curtain airbag. If the turning angle of the vehicle is changed due to a rollover accident, the sensor detects it, and the inflator deploys the airbag. Its cushion is inflated by gas and covers the entire roof surface of the vehicle in just 0.08 seconds to protect the passengers.
According to Hyundai, during the development process, the airbag was deployed in a road test using dummies and prevented the passenger from being flung out of the car and cushioned the impact on the head.
Hyundai has not announced when the airbag will be offered on a production vehicle.
