Hyundai has unveiled its first model from its new N performance lineup – the i30 N. Based on the i30, which is sold here as the Elantra GT, the i30 N is Hyundai’s answer to the VW GTI and Focus ST with its turbocharged four-cylinder and hot hatch layout.
The i30 N will be offered with two specs. The base model is powered by a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder with 247 horsepower that can get the hatchback from 0-62 mph in 6.4 seconds. If you want more power, the optional Performance Package ups it to 271 horsepower giving the i30 N a slightly faster 0-62 mph time of 6.1 seconds. The 2.0L is mated to a standard six-speed automatic that sends it power to the ground via the front wheels.
“The Hyundai i30 N has been developed for no other purpose than to deliver maximum driving fun to our customers in an accessible high-performance package,” says Albert Biermann, Executive Vice President Performance Development and High Performance Vehicle Division.
According to Hyundai, the ‘N’ stands for Namyang, Hyundai Motor’s global R&D Centre in Korea and for the Nürburgring, home to Hyundai Motor’s European Test Center, so it makes sense that the i30 N put down over 6,000 miles on the famed track during testing.
In addition to the turbocharged four-cylinder, the i30 N also ha a lower ride height than the standard i30, plus a new variable exhaust system. The sweet exhaust system can wake up your neighbors with the push of a button. On the outside, the i30 N does look more aggressive than the i30, but it’s overall design is more subtle than the Civic Type R.
What’s the bad news? Hyundai isn’t bringing the i30 N to the United States.
