Early next year GM is going to release the 2014 Cadillac ELR coupe, which borrows its electric powertrain from the Chevy Volt. GM CEO recently stated that it hopes to position Cadillac to take on Tesla Motors, who is making waves in the electric segment with its Model S sedan.
Akerson has revealed that GM has also set up a small team to study Tesla and that it wants to position Cadillac to move upmarket with its electric vehicles. Akerson also revealed that he doesn’t expect the ELR to be a mass-produced car, but that its price point will make it more of a direct competitor to the Model S, than the Chevy Volt.

GM also revealed last week that it is working on a new affordable 200-mile range electric car. Also the next Volt is expected to be significantly cheaper than the current model when it arrives in late 2015 or early 2016.
