Ford has announced that the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E electric crossover has received the Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

To earn the Top Safety Pick award, a vehicle must receive good ratings in all six IIHS crashworthiness tests — driver- and passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints. The vehicle must also be available with good or acceptable headlights and a front crash prevention system that earns advanced or superior ratings in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E missed out on the higher Top Safety Pick+ award, since it’s LED reflectors installed on the Select and California Route 1 trims only received a marginal rating. The LED projector headlights on the Premium, GT and First Edition trims received a higher good rating, but to get the “plus” award all of a vehicle’s headlights have to be rated as good or acceptable.
