The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has announced that the 2021 Ford F-150 has received its second highest rating, Top Safety Pick. The F-150 is only the second large truck to receive the award, following some improvements to its available headlights.

To receive the Top Safety Pick award, a vehicle must earn good ratings in all six IIHS crashworthiness tests, including the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. It must also be available with a front crash prevention system that earns advanced or superior ratings.

A vehicle’s headlights are the last factor between receiving the Top Safety Pick award or the higher Top Safety Pick+ award. For the lower-tier award, at least one good or acceptable headlight system must be available, but to get the “plus,” good or acceptable headlights must be standard.

The 2021 F-150 earned the lower award, since it is available with headlights that earn good or acceptable ratings, but the a poor rating for the base halogens prevented the F-150 from earning the “plus.”
