A few months ago Ford announced that it is killing off its car lineup in the United States with the only survivors being the Mustang and the yet to be released Focus Active. Now we’re hearing that, the Fusion may not be completely dead, since its name could be used for a future model, possibly called the Fusion Active.

Instead of being used on a new sedan, the Fusion name may actually be used for a crossover-like wagon, like the Subaru Outback. Sources revealed to Bloomberg that while the Fusion sedan is going to disappear in the next few years, its name will likely live on as a “high-roofed hatchback.”

While Ford has yet to confirm the details, if the reports are true, the new Outback rival will likely be called the Fusion Active, similar to the high-riding Focus Active. Ford spokesman Mike Levine wouldn’t comment on the report, but he did say “we’ll likely continue to use the name because of its awareness, positive imagery and value with consumers.”

While sedan sales are declining, revamping the Fusion as a Subaru Outback rival could be a win for Ford, since sales of the Outback are actually up 5.5 percent this year. The Outback is actually on track to outsell the Fusion this year.
