Now that Volvo has introduced the first model from its new 40-Series, the XC40, our attention is now focused on Volvo’s next compact models. The next 40-Series model is expected to be the new V40 hatchback, which will rival models, like the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus and Honda Civic.

The V40 is expected to borrow styling cues from the 40.2 concept, while it will be based on the same CMA platform as the XC40 crossover. The V40 will be offered with a range of three- and four-cylinder engines, while AutoExpress is also reporting that a fully electric version is also in the works. The electric V40 will also offer two battery options.

“For each electric car, we will typically have at least two different battery sizes on offer,” Volvo’s head of research and development, Henrik Green told AutoExpress. “The base variant will be more cost-efficient, but with a slightly limited range, and then there will be a bigger option with a higher price, but more range and more power.”

It’s not known yet when the electric V40 will be introduced, but it won’t be the first electric model based on the CMA platform. Polestar use the platform first for the electric Polestar 2, which is expected to arrive sometime in 2019.
