According to a report by the Automotive News, GM is going to try to convince buyers that its new 2008 Chevrolet Malibu is better than the Toyota Camry by having the Camry in their showrooms.
The automaker is so confident in their new Malibu that they are willing to risk sales by having their main competitor sitting right beside it. Chevy’s marketing director, Cheryl Catton doesn’t feel that it is enough to just tell customers that their product is better than Toyota, they need to show them.
The new 2008 Malibu is set to begin production in October and ads will start showing up in January. The head to head match is expected to launch around the same time as the ads.
Instead of adding to Toyota Camry sales, the automaker will rent the Camrys that will sit in their showrooms.
This could be very a risky idea. I wonder what model of the Camry they will sit next to the Malibu? Since most rental cars are the base models will they sit the base Camry next to a base Malibu? Probably not. Also what about the Malibu’s other competition such as the 2008 Honda Accord?
