General Motors has made some big announcements about its future this morning, with the biggest one being that Cadillac will now be positioned as its lead electric vehicle brand.

Part of the push to turn Cadillac into a true rival to Tesla will be the introduction of the first model from the GM’s all new battery electric vehicle platform. The new platform has been designed to accommodate a range of body styles in addition to front-wheel, rear-wheel and all-wheel configurations.

The new electric vehicles will also be able to drive over 300 miles on a single charge. The new platform will reportedly be ready by 2021.

The decision to turn Cadillac into an EV brand will help it not only appeal more to buyers in China, but also help GM fully battle Tesla and the other growing number of electric vehicles hitting the market soon. Cadillac recently announced that the CT6 plug-in hybrid is done in the US and the ELR is plug-in hybrid is long gone, so this is announcement is good news for Cadillac.
