A few months ago it was reported that the BMW i3 and i8 electric cars may not live past their current generations. Even with BMW already confirming the new i4 and iNext EVs, the future for the two models that started the i sub-brand may not get successors, according to one BMW exec.

2018 BMW i3 and i3s

Speaking to Automotive News at the New York Auto Show, Stefan Juraschek, head of electric powertrain for BMW AG, hinted that the we may not get a second generation of the BMW i3 and i8. “These cars are very unique,” Juraschek stated. “These two cars were not [developed] as a family that we can expand in different [ways] or maybe five or 10 derivatives.”

BMW originally developed the i3 and i8 as technology showcases with much of the technology used in them now being filtered down to the rest of the BMW family. While BMW has yet to make a decision about a new i3 or i8, neither model is expected to disappear anytime soon. The 2018 BMW i3 just received a refresh and the i8 Roadster is arriving this spring.
