BMW unveiled the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupé at this year’s Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance and while the coupe is labeled as a one-off project from the partnership between BMW and Pininfarina, it could provide a hint at BMW’s future. The BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupé may signal the revival of the 8 Series, which would give BMW a model to go head to head with other large coupes like the Mercedes-Benz CL.

Currently the largest coupe in BMW’s lineup is the 6 Series, but the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupé, which is based on the BMW 7 Series platform would be even bigger and more spacious than the 6 Series.

Although no decision has been announced, sources claim that BMW is weighing a return to the high-end coupe segment, which it hasn’t competed in since 1999.

“We want to send out the message the future is not all about electric cars but also traditional models with real emotional appeal,” said a BMW insider.
