Still getting used to the M versions of the BMW X5 and X6? Well BMW is planning an M version of its newest crossover, the X3. According to sources the X3 M is currently in the works and is set for a launch as early as 2012.

The X3 M is expected to be powered by a new turbocharged inline six cylinder, which according to sources will also power the next M3. The interesting fact is that it’s being reported that the engine will feature three turbochargers (one electric and two exhaust-gas driven). The displacement of the engine is going to be slightly bigger at 3.2L compared to 3.0L. According to CAR the engine will be rated somewhere around 449 horsepower.

It’s also being reported that the next X5 M and X6 M will still be powered by the twin-turbocharged 4.4L V8, but the horsepower will go up from 555 to 564 and it will be between 10-15% more efficient. Will there be an X1 M as well?
