BMW has unveiled both the i3 and i8 concepts today, which will have their official world debut in Frankfurt in September. While the i3 is more focused on urban mobility, the i8 concept previews BMW’s next supercar that will be released in 2014.
The i8 concept has a plug-in hybrid setup, unlike the standard EV only i3. The i8’s main source of power comes from a turbocharged 1.5L three-cylinder gas engine. The i8 borrows the electric motor from the i3, but will only have an all-electric driving range around 20 miles. The i8 concept reaches 0-62 mph in less than five seconds.
When the i8 is released in 2014 it will be produced at BMW’s Leipzig plant in Germany.
