It was rumored that BMW is working on a 1-Series sedan to compete with both the CLA and A3, but BMW’s development boss, Dr. Herbert Diess recently stated that it has no immediate plans for a sedan smaller than the 3-Series.
Mercedes-Benz has seen tremendous success with the introduction of the new CLA and now Audi is hoping that it can see similar results with the new 2015 A3 sedan. It was rumored that BMW is working on a 1-Series sedan to compete with both the CLA and A3, but BMW’s development boss, Dr. Herbert Diess recently stated that it has no immediate plans for a sedan smaller than the 3-Series.
Speaking to Wards Auto, Dr. Herbert Diess stated that BMW doesn’t see the need for a smaller sedan and if buyers are seeking a small four door model they can look at the X1 crossover and possibly the 2-Series MPV, if it comes to the U.S. Part of the reason that BMW doesn’t want to offer a 1-Series sedan right now is because it could cannibalize sales from the 3-Series.
Diess did confirm that a convertible version of the recently launched 2-Series will arrive by the end of the rear with a soft top.
