There are rumors circulating that Audi is working on a smaller mid-engined sports car to compete with other cars such as the Porsche Boxster. The mid-engined car could use a more powerful version of the company’s 2.0L turbo and a turbocharged 2.5L in-line five, which would be in an RS model.
The car will be built on an all-new platform, but could still borrow other parts from their existing parts bin. One change from the Audi R8 is that the Audi R4 would not use lightweight aluminum, instead it would use a high-strength steel spaceframe for the chassis. The body panels would be aluminum and plastic.
It is rumored that if the car is produced it will be released at the end of 2009.
