Audi Bucks the Trend: CVT Development Ends as Dual-Clutch Transmission Takes Over

Just as almost every automaker is introducing CVT transmissions in their more fuel efficient models, Audi has announced that development on its own CVT has ended.

Just as almost every automaker is introducing CVT transmissions in their more fuel efficient models, Audi has announced that development on its own CVT has ended. Instead of using a CVT in models like the A4, Audi’s CVT is going to be phased out over the next few years.
Currently the front-wheel-drive versions of the A4 and A6 use a multitronic CVT transmission, but the next-generation models will use a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Audi engineer Ralph Riegger stated to Motoring, “It served its purpose because it was very good for fuel economy, but now we have this new stepped transmission that is better.”

The next Audi A4 is expected to arrive next year.
