Back in October Land Rover hinted that the next-generation Land Rover Defender could be offered with an electrified powertrain. “Electrified” is such a broad term, since it can easily be applied to anything from a mild hybrid, to a plug-in hybrid even a fully electric model. According to the latest report, an inside source has confirmed that the next Defender will be offered with an all electric version.

Australia’s Motoring recently spoke to a senior Jaguar Land Rover source that revealed that Land Rover will introduce an electric Defender. It will use at least one electric motor with a powerful battery. We also know that the new Defender will be based on a modified version of the aluminum platform that’s used by the Discovery, Range Rover, and Range Rover Sport.

Multiple versions of the Defender will also be available with wheelbases measuring 90 and 110 inches. If you’re wondering what the new Defender will look like, Land Rover has already confirmed that it won’t be a retro themed model with a final design that will be more polarizing.

It’s expected that Land Rover will officially unveil the new Defender sometime next year to celebrate its 70th anniversary before the Defender goes on sale in 2019.

With the arrival of an electric Defender, it looks like the Bollinger B1 will have some stiff competition.
