It’s expected that BMW will officially debut the 2019 BMW Z4 next month during Monterey Car Week, which will include the debut of the six-cylinder M40i version. While the Z4 M40i is powered by a turbocharged six-cylinder engine, don’t expect BMW to release anything above it, since BMW recently hinted that a Z4 M is not in the cards.

Speaking to Car and Driver, BMW M division boss Frank van Meel revealed that sales of a new Z4 M would likely be too small to justify creating it. “Let me put it this way: I think the M40i is the perfect positioning regarding performance of that car,” he stated. “It’s quite close to the M2, so we’re really happy with the overall concept of that car being an M40i. If you would go any higher, it would be very, very narrow in customer groups.”

For now it looks like a new Z4 M is definitely out.
