The fate of the Subaru BRZ may be in jeopardy since Toyota is currently mulling plans to end its current partnership with Subaru as it further deepens its ties with BMW. The Subaru BRZ was the result of Toyota’s 20 percent stake in Subaru’s parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, which lead to the creation of both the BRZ and GT 86/ Scion FR-S.
BMW and Toyota are currently working on a new sports car that will slot above the GT 86, but the partnership could be expanded further to include the second-generation GT 86. Tetsuya Tada, the chief engineer for the new BMW and Toyota sports car recently revealed that it is a possibility that BMW could have a role in the development of the next GT 86, which is expected to be more radical than the current model.

Tada also confirmed that the next-generation GT 86 may receive some sort of electrification to increase its power output. In the meantime the current GT 86/ BRZ are expected to get a refresh for the 2016 model year, which could include a larger boxer engine or upgraded exhaust and intake systems.
