To mark 30 years of its storied performance badge, Honda has unveiled the refreshed 2027 Honda Civic Type R, which includes some styling updates, performance improvements and more features.
Under the hood there’s still the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 315 horsepower and mated to a six-speed manual. But around that centerpiece are some new touches for 2027. The front fascia has been overhauled for better engine cooling and the suspension has been retuned. There is also a new level of standard tech with Google built-in and Gemini, and, for the first time, the Type R offers heated front seats.
On the outside the 2027 Civic Type R has an updated face with a larger grille and a deeper front splitter, that gives it a more aggressive look. The splitter puts down more force and the revised front end curbs airflow turbulence, which in turn aids cooling.
There is a nod to heritage under the hood too, in the form of an engine cover patterned after the early Type Rs from Japan, a fitting gesture for the 30th anniversary.
You will find similar focus in the changes below the belt. In +R mode the suspension damping has been recalibrated to keep the car planted and minimize any harshness from the road surface. The rev-matching has been made to respond faster for a smoother downshift, and the brake pedal now has a more direct quality thanks to a new yoke spring that takes up the slack in the linkage.
Inside, for those who put their Type R to use every day, the addition of heated front seats for 2027 is likely the best news. There is a diamond-pattern trim panel with a black surround to complement the black air-vent knobs. Ultrasuede has been applied to the front doors and upper dashboard, which not only adds to the upscale look but also serves to cut down on windshield reflections, according to Honda.
Visual updates are present elsewhere: the aluminum shift knob, console trim and interior door handles have taken on a darker gray hue, and the climate-control knobs are now black with silver trim on the door panels. Lastly there’s also a new auto-dimming rearview mirror.
The technology side of things has advanced. This is the first time the Type R has Google built-in, so you can access Google Maps, Play and the Gemini AI assistant from within the car.
Gemini is the successor to Google Assistant and is meant to be more conversational, able to hold context over several requests so the driver can keep his hands on the wheel. Amazon Alexa is standard as well.New Colors for 2027
There are four exterior shades to choose from. Meteorite Gray Metallic is new to the lineup for 2027, alongside the Boost Blue Pearl, Sonic Gray Pearl and the Championship White.
The pricing for the 2027 Honda Civic Type R starts at $49,990. It will arrive at dealers this month.
