With the Model X a thing of the past, Tesla has moved to plug the void for buyers in need of more room without going all the way to a full-size EV. Enter the new Model Y L, a long-wheelbase addition to the lineup that puts true three-row utility and a 2+2+2 six-passenger layout into the compact electric SUV segment.

You can see the extra heft in the numbers. The Model Y L’s wheelbase is 5.9 inches longer than the standard Y and is a total of 7 inches longer, yet it still keeps a fairly compact profile when you put it up against other three-row SUVs. That gives you a good deal of comfort in the second row and a usable third row. Fold the seats and you have as much as 89 cubic feet of cargo space according to Tesla.

The interior reworking is less about cramming in seats and more for the sake of the passengers. In the 2+2+2 middle row you will find captain’s chairs with powered armrests and one-touch folding, plus they are both ventilated and heated. The third row isn’t an afterthought either; it has its own vented climate control and power recline to make longer trips more bearable.

Tesla claims a 0-60 time of 4.4 seconds and it has a 325 mile range. You can add 164 miles in 15 minutes.

For this launch Tesla is keeping things simple. There is no need to wade through dealer options; the Y L is available only in a Premium spec, starting $61,990.
