The 2027 Toyota Highlander is officially going electric. Toyota has revealed an all-new, battery-electric version of its best-selling three-row SUV, marking the brand’s first three-row EV for the U.S. market — and the first Toyota EV assembled in America. Production will take place at Toyota’s plant in Georgetown, Kentucky, with batteries sourced from its new facility in Liberty, North Carolina.

The electric Highlander rides on a modified TNGA-K platform engineered to accommodate the battery pack while maximizing interior space. Toyota widened the SUV by 2.3 inches and stretched the wheelbase to 120.1 inches, up from 112 inches in the outgoing model. Overall height is slightly lower, giving it a more planted stance.

Exterior styling follows Toyota’s latest “hammerhead” design language, with slim daytime running lights, broad fenders, flush door handles, and a more aerodynamic profile.

The 2027 Highlander EV will be offered in two trims: XLE and Limited.

The base XLE comes standard with front-wheel drive and a 77.0-kWh battery. Buyers can also opt for all-wheel drive, which adds a second motor at the rear. AWD versions are available with either the 77.0-kWh battery or a larger 95.8-kWh pack. The Limited trim comes standard with AWD and the larger battery.

Power output varies by configuration:

  • FWD models: 221 horsepower and 198 lb-ft of torque
  • AWD models: 338 horsepower and 323 lb-ft of torque

Toyota says the added output and low center of gravity should deliver the kind of quick, smooth acceleration EV buyers expect. AWD models also get Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control, giving the Highlander some light off-road capability.

Toyota estimates the following ranges:

  • XLE FWD (77.0 kWh): 287 miles
  • XLE AWD (77.0 kWh): 270 miles
  • XLE AWD (95.8 kWh): 320 miles
  • Limited AWD (95.8 kWh): 320 miles

Every 2027 Highlander EV comes with a North American Charging System (NACS) port, giving it access to Tesla’s Supercharger network and other compatible DC fast-charging stations. Under ideal conditions, Toyota says it can charge from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes.

Inside, the new Highlander gets a full redesign. A 14-inch touchscreen sits at the center of the dash, paired with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Second-row captain’s chairs are standard, with a bench available on select trims for seating up to seven. Toyota claims more than 45 cubic feet of cargo space with the third row folded flat.

Sales are expected to begin in late 2026, with pricing to be announced closer to launch.
