Ford has revealed major changes for the future of the F-150 Lightning, confirming that the next-generation electric pickup will switch to Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) technology. In a dramatic shift from the current fully electric Lightning, the upcoming model will incorporate a gas engine that acts solely as a generator, charging the battery rather than powering the wheels.

This change aims to eliminate one of the biggest concerns for EV truck owners: range anxiety. Ford estimates the next-gen F-150 Lightning EREV will deliver over 700 miles of total range, a significant jump from today’s fully-electric variant.

Despite adding a gas generator, Ford says the truck will remain 100% electrically driven, meaning the wheels are powered exclusively by electric motors. Owners will still get the instant torque, smooth acceleration and quiet operation of a pure EV, while gaining the confidence needed for long-distance towing or travel without relying on public charging stations.

Like the current model, the next-generation F-150 Lightning will retain exportable power capability, allowing drivers to run tools, accessories, campsites, or even power a home during outages.

Production of the existing F-150 Lightning ends later this year, but Ford has not yet announced an arrival date for the new F-150 Lightning EREV.
