Polestar has finally pulled the covers off the 2023 Polestar 3 electric SUV. It’s based on the same SPA 2 platform as the upcoming Volvo EX90. Give its size and power, the Polestar 3 is ready to battle other performance focused SUVs, like the Porsche Cayenne.
The 2023 Polestar 3 is the first model that has been developed for the brand from the start and it is also the first to get the brand’s new design language, which debuted with the Precept concept. Speaking of the Precept concept, Polestar has already confirmed a production version that will arrive in 2024 as the Polestar 5.
The Polestar 3 measures 192.9 inches long and 64 inches tall, which makes it just slightly smaller than the Cayenne. Polestar placed an emphasis on aerodynamics, which helps the 3 get a low drag coefficient of 0.29. At the front there’s the brand’s signature Y-shaped headlights and a heated SmartZone panel that contains several sensors and cameras. Overall the look of the Polestar 3 is very attractive with its muscular design and black trim.
Inside the Polestar 3 gets a similar minimalistic design theme like the Polestar 2. There’s an 14.5-inch touchscreen and a horizontal 9-inch gauge cluster display. The Polestar 3 will only be available with two rows of seats.
The Polestar 3 is powered by a 111-kWh battery pack, but it doesn’t get 800-volt tech. It can accept charging speeds of up to 250 kW. The first Polestar to get 800-volt tech will be the Polestar 5. The Polestar 3 can be charged from 10-80 percent in 30 minutes, while an 11-kW home charger can charge it from 0-100 percent in 11 hours. Bi-directional charging is also included so the Polestar 3 can power appliances, other vehicles and even send power back to the power grid.
For not there’s only one powertrain, with an electric motor at each axle. The total output is 489 horsepower and 620 pound-feet of torque, which accelerates it from 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds. The $6,000 Performance Pack ups those ratings to 517 hp and 671 lb-ft, and also reduces the 0-60 time by 0.3 seconds. Polestar estimates that it will have a 300 mile EPA range, which is reduced to 270 miles with the Performance Package.
The pricing for the Polestar 3 starts at $85,300. The first deliveries are expected in the fourth quarter of 2023.
