The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has announced that the 2019 Toyota Avalon has earned its highest safety rating – Top Safety Pick+. The 2019 Avalon Limited and Touring trim levels earn the highest rating, while the less expensive XSE and XLE trim levels are rated lower because of their inadequate headlights.

To earn the 2018 Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS a vehicle must earn good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests and an acceptable or good rating in the passenger-side small overlap test. It also needs available front crash prevention that earns an advanced or superior rating and available good-rated headlights.

The 2019 Avalon also earned an acceptable rating in the new passenger-side test. According to the IIHS the Avalon’s structure held up well in the passenger-side test, but the dummy’s head barely contacted the front airbag before sliding off.

The 2019 Toyota Avalon comes standard with front crash prevention. The Avalon’s front crash prevention system avoided collisions in IIHS track tests at 12 and 25 mph.
