Mazda has yet to announce when the diesel powered CX-5 is going to go on sale, but it might be happening soon, since the EPA has released the fuel economy specs. The 2018 Mazda CX-5 diesel is rated at up to 28 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.
If you choose the all-wheel drive CX-5 diesel, it’s slightly less fuel efficient at 27 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. These specs might be a bit disappointing, since the 2.5L four-cylinder gasoline engine is only slightly less efficient at 25/31 mpg with front-wheel drive and 24/30 mpg if you choose all-wheel drive. Factor in the price premium for the diesel powered CX-5 and it becomes even less of a value.
The Mazda CX-5 diesel’s biggest rival, the diesel powered Chevy Equinox is more efficient at 28/39 mpg with front-wheel drive and 28/38 mpg with all-wheel drive.
Mazda has yet to announce the pricing for the CX-5 diesel.
