Ford has announced that it has started building the small 2018 Ford EcoSport crossover in Romania to meet growing demand in Europe. Ford decided to move production to its plant Craiova, Romania from its plant in Chennai, India to keep up with the demand for the EcoSport, which is going to be sold in 56 markets, including the United States.
The Craiova plant is now the sole production plant for the 2018 EcoSport, which means that Ford is creating another 1,700 jobs at Ford Craiova, bringing the total workforce for both vehicle and engine production to 3,900. “With demand growing for EcoSport, and compact SUVs in general, now is the right time to localize production in Europe to meet our customers’ needs,” stated Steven Armstrong, Ford group vice president and president, Europe Middle East and Africa.
The 2018 Ford EcoSport will go on sale in the United States early next year. It will be offered with a choice of either a turbocharged 1.0L three-cylinder or a 2.0L four-cylinder.
