Fiat is giving the 2018 Fiat 500 a series of updates, with the biggest change being the addition of a turbocharged engine across the lineup, but it comes at a cost. The 2018 Fiat 500 is now $1,500 more expensive than last year’s model, which could hurt the small hatchback’s sales.
According to Cars Direct, the 2018 Fiat 500 Pop will now start at $17,490 with the destination fees included. A closer look at the base price also reveals that not only did the base price for the Fiat 500 go up, but so did its destination fees, which are now at $1,245 compared to $995 with last year’s model. The year-over-year change is 9.4%, which is a lot higher than usual.
If you step up to the Fiat 500 Lounge, it starts at $20,990, which is $1,500 more and the 500 Abarth is now priced at $21,740, which is $750 higher.
What does the extra cost get you? The 2018 Fiat 500 Pop and Lounge models are now powered by a turbocharged 1.4L four-cylinder that generates 135 horsepower – 34 more than before. The 1.4L can be mated to either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The 2018 Fiat 500 Abarth is powered by a 1.4L turbocharged engine with 160 horsepower and 183 lb-ft. of torque.
Other additions, include standard 16-inch aluminum wheels, upgraded brakes, a sport suspension and a rear backup camera. The exterior has also been updated with restyled front and rear fascias.
