Buick has unveiled the next-generation 2018 Regal, which will be offered in both wagon and hatchback versions, instead of today’s sedan only bodystyle. Sedan sales are taking a big hit in the U.S., so it’s not surprising to see that Buick is only going to release hatchback and wagon versions – the Sportback and TourX.
The 2018 Regal Sportback features a more coupe-like roofline than the current Regal sedan. It also can hold twice as much stuff in its trunk with 31.5 cubic feet of cargo space.
“The new Regal Sportback was developed with today’s active, independent, premium car customer in mind,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president, Global Buick and GMC. “They have an SUV in the garage and are looking to complement it with a sport sedan, but have an appreciation for the usefulness of a versatile cargo space when an occasional need arises.”
The Regal Sportback is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 250 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The 2.0L is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. An available 295 lb-ft of torque is sent through an eight-speed automatic transmission on models with optional intelligent AWD. The 2018 Regal Sportback will be offered in four trim levels — Regal, Preferred, Preferred II and Essence when it arrives in late 2016.
